The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of researchers working on early modern history/studies at the University of Luxembourg. The PhD contract is funded by the FNR (Fonds national de la recherche) as part of the CORE project GOVLU : Governing the Duchy of Luxembourg within the polycentric monarchy of Habsburg Spain (16th and 17th c.). Political actors and communication strategies at the periphery of the Spanish Netherlands.

Your role

Under the supervision of the P.I. and with the guidance of a CET, the successful candidate will research, write and defend a doctoral thesis provisionally entitled Luxembourg-Brussels, aller-retour. Correspondence, mobility and discourse in the government of a strategic periphery of the Spanish Netherlands (16th-17th c.).

Your profile

  • Master's degree in history, preferably in early modern history (16th-17th c.) and with a focus on the Spanish Low Countries or on the polycentric monarchy of Spain
  • Some experience with archival sources in French and/or German
  • An interest in the use of digital tools for the processing of archives and the analysis of political discourse
  • The capacity and eagerness to work in a team and to expand academic networks
  • The willingness to relocate to Luxembourg or its wider region

Language Requirements:
