Purpose of the position
- Participate in the setting-up of a research project.
- Carry out and finalize a research project by writing a PhD thesis in the view of obtaining a PhD degree.
- Publish her/his results in scientific journals and/or file patents if applicable.
- Disseminate her/his results to the scientific community and the general public.
Key Accountabilities
- Conduct research at a high standard to obtain the goals of the research project in the defined timeframe.
- Be the driving force and the best expert of her/his research project.
- Carry out his/her PhD in accordance with the conditions agreed between universities, the research unit and the PhD supervisor (PhD supervision agreement).
- Work with a PhD supervisor who has set up a research project and participate in the drafting of scientific articles and /or patents about the ongoing project.
- Carry out bibliographic research and be up-to-date with the literature related to the project.
- Organize and participate in the proper conduct of experiments in relation with team members and technical staff as required by the PhD project.
- Develop a scientific methodology and techniques adapted to the research project.
- Ensure state-of-the-art documentation of experiments, procedures and results.
- Bring in own ideas that respect the work plan and progressively develop autonomy for project management.
- Present the project and results during internal meetings and at national/international meetings.
- Present the results in the front of an advisory committee (thesis supervisory committee).
- Regularly exchange about project progress, results and ideas as well as any problems and possible solutions with PhD supervisor/supervisory team.
- Introduce methods and techniques for new group members (visiting scientists, junior PhD students).
- Participate in the promoting science and research to the public by disseminating simplified research results (through articles, conferences, hands-on workshops etc.).
Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent).
- Excellent time management, rigor, perseverance, scientific creativity and originality, writing skills, conciseness, sense of priority and ability to work with others.
- IT skills: Office, Outlook, Endnote if needed.
- Languages skills: fluent command of English, knowledge of another language of the European Union is an asset.
