The University | About us...

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character. The University was founded in 2003 and counts more than 6,700 students and more than 2,000 employees from around the world. The University's faculties and interdisciplinary centres focus on research in the areas of Computer Science and ICT Security, Materials Science, European and International Law, Finance and Financial Innovation, Education, Contemporary and Digital History. In addition, the University focuses on cross-disciplinary research in the areas of Data Modelling and Simulation as well as Health and System Biomedicine. Times Higher Education ranks the University of Luxembourg #3 worldwide for its "international outlook," #20 in the Young University Ranking 2021 and among the top 250 universities worldwide.

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine. Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens, in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.

The University of Luxembourg (UL) is seeking to hire a highly motivated and skilled Computational Science Research Scientist within the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine linked to HPC service of the University of Luxembourg.

Since 2006, the University of Luxembourg has invested into its own High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities. Special focus was laid on the development of large computing power combined with huge data storage capacity to accelerate the research performed in intensive computing and large-scale data analytic (Big Data). This characteristic distinguishes the HPC center at the university from many other HPC facilities, which often concentrate on only one of these two pillars. Nowadays, the UL HPC team is deeply involved in the national and European HPC developments. Further information can be found on hpc.uni.lu. The activities include classical HPC applications such as simulation and modeling, but also emerging ones including artificial intelligence and machine learning, bridging computational science, with data science, and data management (IoT/Edge/HPC).

Your Role...

The HPC team is organized into 2 groups: one group managing the digital platform (i.e., ensuring that the system including middleware is in place and functioning), and one group providing the high-level support to end users.

The research and education high-level support team (HLST) of the HPC service aims at:

  • Providing research support to the University research projects across faculties and interdisciplinary centers, including the participation to international/EU and national projects
  • Providing teaching and educational support to the University bachelor, master, and PhD programmes as well as life-long learning activities
  • Providing support to the external partners and industry using the University HPC
  • Participating in the national and European efforts in matters of HPC through the HPC, Competence center in collaboration with the national HPC center (LuxProvide) and Luxinnovation

To this end, research scientist will conduct the following tasks:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in computational science with a focus on developing methodology and high-performance algorithms in physical sciences and/or engineering
  • Develop and implement novel algorithms and computational models to address complex scientific problems
  • Provide high-level support to internal and external partners
  • Assisting the setup of the teaching framework on HPC skills
  • Collaborate with the Technology Transfer Office on the skills and technology access framework
  • Participate in the research, education and training activities across faculties and interdisciplinary centers
  • Writing of funding demands and scientific articles in the field

What we expect from you…

  • PhD degree Computational Science, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Proven track record of impactful research in computational science, demonstrated through publications in reputable scientific journals and conferences
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in computational science, such as Python, C++, or Fortran
  • Previous involvement in interdisciplinary research projects
  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) systems and parallel programming
  • Experience with industry is a plus
  • Over 5 years of experience
  • Great communication skills
  • Understanding and implementation of project management best practices. Ability to manage multiple projects under strict timelines as well as the ability to work well in a demanding, dynamic environment and meet overall objectives
  • Commitment, team working, interpersonal skills and a critical mind
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory. The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context, thus knowledge in at least one of the two official languages of Luxembourg (French or German) is an asset

How to apply...

Your application (in PDF format) should include:

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae, your contact address, training record, work experience and (if available), publications and language test results (e.g.,TOEFL)
  • Letter of intent including the personal motivations for applying to the University of Luxembourg and its HPC
  • Certified copies of degree certificates, incl. a transcript of courses taken (with grades)
  • Names and contact details of three referees

Early application is highly encouraged, as the applications will be processed upon reception. Please apply ONLINE formally through the HR system. Applications by email will not be considered.

The University of Luxembourg embraces inclusion and diversity as key values. We are fully committed to removing any discriminatory barrier related to gender, and not only, in recruitment and career progression of our staff.
