Your role

We are excited to announce a pioneering new faculty position at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) that will explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in the field of historical research and teaching. As AI technologies continue to advance at a rapid pace, we believe it is essential to harness these powerful tools to deepen our understanding of the past and revolutionize the way we study and teach history. This groundbreaking role will be at the forefront of applying AI methodologies to unlock new insights from historical data, enabling us to ask and answer questions that were previously beyond the scope of traditional research methods, and at C2DH you will have a perfect environment in which to experiment and build.

As Professor of AI and History at C2DH you will be responsible for developing and leading an innovative research program that leverages AI technologies to push the boundaries of historical inquiry. You will apply machine learning, natural language processing, and other AI techniques to vast historical, multimodal datasets. By using AI to identify patterns, connections, and trends that might be missed by human researchers, you will offer new perspectives on the past. You will also teach relevant courses to our undergraduate and graduate students and actively participate in our Doctoral Education (Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Doctoral Training Unit on "Deep Data Science of Digital History"). Through your research and teaching, you will help to strengthen the position of the C²DH and the University of Luxembourg as an international leader in the field of digital history and in the application of artificial intelligence to the study of the past in specific.

Your profile

  • You should hold a PhD degree in history, digital humanities, or data/computer science with a proven track record in working with historical data
  • You should have an excellent track record of publications, conference papers, and public outreach in the field of digital history / digital humanities / data science
  • You should have a clearly defined research program which responds to rapid developments in digital tools and methods, and which can build on a range of AI tasks, including those involving natural language processing, computer vision, and multimodal models
  • You should have experience working in a deeply collaborative environment, where you may play different roles across different teams, including not just leadership but also support
  • You should be proficient in English and either French or German. As a multilingual university, UL provides staff access to language courses. The University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end

Language requirements:
The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in English. If not proficient in French, the candidate commits to follow intensive language courses allowing her/him to use French in teaching and research within two years. The University provides access to language courses to this end. The University encourages its staff also to learn German.
