QED Internship (m/f)

The Bissen plant was established in 1910 and has grown steadily over the years to become one of Europe's leading producers of galvanised steel wire and wire products.

ArcelorMittal Bissen is partj of the WireSolutions Business Unit within the Bars & Rods segment of Long Products Europe.

370 people work at ArcelorMittal Bissen to supply more than 1000 different customers inthe following 3 market segments

  • Fencing & Agri Business :field fence, welded mesh for residential and security fencing, barbed wire, vineyard wires
  • Fibers to reinforce concrete in infrastructure projects, flooring, tunneling, buildings and for precasted structures
  • Industrial Wire for applications like gabions, cable trays, cable armouring, animal cages, greenhouses,…

Galvanizing Department produces about 80,000 tons per year of galvanized wire with diameters from 0.8mm to 10mm through 3 galvanizing routes with 101 wires in total. The process of galvanizing wire is broken down as follows:

  • Unwinding: unwinding the wire in coils from the wire drawing mill. Soldering at the coil changes is necessary to keep the process continuous.
  • Lead bath at 500°C: breaking/cracking the soap layer on the wire coming from the previous process - the drawing mill
  • 700°C lead bath: (when necessary) anneal the wire to obtain the required mechanical properties
  • Acid bath: Remove soap and oxide from the surface of the wire
  • Flux bath: Increase the wettability and reaction of the wire with the liquid zinc
  • Zinc bath at 460°C: Form the FeZn intermetallic layer and the zinc layer (Crapo type coating).
  • Crapal Bath (Zinc + Aluminum + Magnesium) at 460°C: Form the protective layer with Zinc + Aluminum called "Crapal" or Zinc + Aluminum + Magnesium called "Optimum" or "Premium" depending on the thickness of the coating.
  • Cooling : Cooling the water wire to obtain a good surface
  • Winding : Winding in the form of rosette or slit coil

For each final customer application, the type of coating (Crapo, Crapal, Optimum or Premium) and its thickness are specifically defined. At the end of the zinc or Crapal baths, the wire enters a wiping nozzle into which nitrogen is injected to create a pressure around the wire loaded with liquid zinc. The higher the pressure, the less zinc remains on the wire. The thickness of the coating layer is thus regulated by adjusting this nitrogen pressure, which is still a manual, one-time operation today.

Responsibilities:

Recently, a new "QED" system has been installed to continuously adjust the nitrogen pressure in order to obtain the coating thickness required by the customer and in a constant manner along the wire. The mission of the internship is to:

  1. Calibrate this system according to the type of coating and the diameter of the wire
  2. To study the possibility of an automatic calibration or to define a recalibration of the system at the start of a wire
  3. Daily follow-up of the results in terms of precision
  4. Participate in the training of the operators in the use of the system

Profile:

  • BAC +4/5 engineering school or equivalent in mechanics or automation.
  • Communication in French and English, oral and written.
