R&D in AI and Criminal Law

The Department of Law of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance of the University of Luxembourg is looking for a Research & Development Specialist to conduct research in the context of the interdisciplinary research project on "Criminal Proceedings and the Use of AI: Challenges for Common Criminal Procedure Principles and the Principles of the Rule of Law". The research project is funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche. It gathers highly qualified experts in criminal law, IT law, data protection law, as well as in AI and machine learning, cybernetics, ethics and representatives of the private sector developing AI to examine critical questions about using AI in criminal proceedings.

Under the direction of Professor Katalin Ligeti, the Research and Development Specialist is expected to contribute to the deliverables and research goals of the project and may be given the responsibility to coordinate the university's contributions to the project and act as an interface to other project partners.

Your Role...

• Conduct desk research on the different topics falling into the scope of the research (AI and criminal law, E-evidence; EU and Council of Europe (CoE) standards on the use of AI in criminal proceedings)
• Organise focus groups and interviews with practitioners working in the criminal justice field in selected EU Members States
• Disseminate results through scientific publications, workshops and conferences (organize workshops, seminars and the final conference; edit the publication of the research results)
• Offer research assistance and coordinate young researchers working in the same field
• Ensure that the project website is updated and contains all relevant information
• Contribute in preparing further research proposals under the leadership of Prof. Ligeti

Qualifications...

• Have a Master degree in Law with specialization in criminal law, criminal procedure or law and technology. Practical experience in criminal law or IT law will be considered an advantage
• Have the linguistic skills to evolve in a multilingual environment: fluency in English; good understanding of a second language and possibly a third language, French or German in particular, would be considered an advantage
• Willingness to work in an inter-cultural and international environment
• Curiosity and self-motivation
• Team-oriented
