About us
The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg is a leading international research and innovation centre in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services.
We play an instrumental role in Europe by fueling innovation through research partnerships with industry, boosting R&D investments leading to economic growth, and attracting highly qualified talent. We look for researchers from diverse academic backgrounds to contribute to our projects in areas such as: Network Security, Information Assurance, Model-driven Security, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Satellite Systems, Vehicular Networks, and ICT Services & Applications.
The SIGCOM research group, led by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas, conducts research in telecommunication and networking systems, including NTNs and quantum communication infrastructures, and explores emerging topics in next-generation communication and computing systems. Further details can be found at: www.uni.lu/snt-en/research-groups/sigcom/
Your role
As a PhD candidate, you will conduct advanced research on the physical-layer integration of communication and positioning in next-generation 5G/6G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs), with a focus on LEO satellite systems.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Investigating joint communication and positioning techniques at the waveform and receiver levels, including integrated signal design and synchronization strategies
- Developing signal processing and estimation algorithms for positioning in high-dynamics NTN scenarios, accounting for satellite mobility, Doppler effects, and time-varying propagation conditions
- Exploring GNSS-5G coexistence and hybrid positioning approaches for resilient PNT in degraded and interference-prone
- Aligning the research with ongoing 3GPP developments in 5G/6G NTN and positioning standardization
- Publishing results in leading peer-reviewed journals and presenting at major international conferences
For further information, please contact: Dr. Jorge Querol () or Dr. Idir Edjekouane ()
Your profile
- MSc or MEng degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field
- Strong background in digital signal processing and mathematics, demonstrated through academic performance and/or prior publications
- Solid knowledge of wireless communication systems
- Background in optimization and information theory is desirable
- Interest or prior exposure to positioning technologies, GNSS, or satellite communications is a plus
- Strong programming skills in MATLAB is required. Experience with C/C++, Python, or related tools is advantageous
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international research environment
